Made it to Dublin

Have an apartment, something I managed in record time. I've been hanging out with some Irish friends of mine, and generally having a lot of fun.

Even so, I'm a bit annoyed with Ireland right now. I got an apartment in the middle of Dublin. When I say "middle," I mean, the epicenter. You couldn't get much more central Dublin than I am currently. The "millenium needle," a tall metal spire built to commemorate the changing of the millenium and released in...um...2002 or 2003, is about two blocks from where I live.

I can't get DSL OR Cable Broadband at this location. Just to put that into perspective, imagine not being able to get a broadband internet connection in an apartment looking over Times Square. It's 2004, and it should be OUTRAGEOUS for ANYBODY to suggest that it isn't technically possible to offer broadband to the CENTER of the FINANCIAL HEART of Ireland.

In September, it will be two years since I've had a broadband internet connection in the home. Oddly enough, I had broadband internet in Lausanne, Switzerland, from Day One, in spite of the fact that my buliding was built in 1912. Somehow, an ancient town in a mountanous country managed to offer me TWO broadband options, DSL and Cable, and in the center of the largest city in Ireland, I can't get either.

I curse Eircom and all that it represents. At least the beer is much better here.
